If the guys at work today were any indication, there's a helluva controversy brewing about this Google Buzz thing. Everyone is worried about how a social network that they never signed up for -- but is already linked to their primary email account -- will affect their privacy. Those with secrets to keep are seriously bummed out. The guys talked about everything that might accidentally be leaked via a comprehensive list of their Gmail contacts -- things like infidelity (not that any of them were guilty) or talking with a competing firm or company while working for another. But as usual, I focused my outrage on the principal of the thing. In theory, it sounded horrible. But I just took a good, hard look at it, and have to admit, I'm not sure if any of my rights are actually being violated. What I saw looked a whole lot like what I imagine Twitter looks like, and what I (unfortunately) know Facebook looks like: People I know posting mundane tidbits about their tedious, boring routines -- things I’ve never, and will never, care about. So I guess that’s how I've been violated.
I just want email. I don't want suggestions for purchases I should make based on the content of my email. I don't want cute little spam casserole recipes. And I definitely don't want to know that some dude, who I once bought a guitar pedal from on Craigslist, is heading over to the Caliente Cab Company for mojitos..."Hair of the dog, dude!"
Enough.
I feel so dirty. What about you?
