If your child has trouble sleeping, frets over homework, or doesn't know what to do with unstructured time, you may want to ask yourself: Is your family living with unnecessary stress?

Why are some kids anxious?
Childhood stress occurs for several reasons (such as the pairing of high expectations with permissive parenting). "On the one side, our children are constantly pushed," says Carl Honoré, parent and author of the book 'Under Pressure.' "On the other side, they don't have limits put on them. I've seen households where the 7-year-old is running the show. Everything revolves around the child, and no one ever says no." The expectation to excel, combined with a lack of boundaries, can leave a child feeling burdened with too much responsibility at a young age.

Roy Steinbock, M.D., an integrative pediatrician and parent, says children are over-stimulated by television, by expectations of achievement, and by their parents' anxiety. "If you think your child is anxious, look at yourself first," he says. "Modeling is the most important thing you can do for your child." Honoré agrees. "We have an over-managed, hyper approach to our kids," he says. "Children tap into our own deeper anxiety about whether they are going to be OK."

Signs your child may be over-stressed
Children show their stress differently than adults, and the symptoms may be obvious or subtle. A stressed child could complain of a tummy ache, a headache, or experience skin issues. Sleep issues are another possible sign. "They may have difficulty sleeping, bedwetting, nightmares, an inability to fall asleep or self-sooth," says Steinbock. Low-grade chronic stress can interfere with a child's overall immune function, causing him or her to get sick more frequently or develop stress-related conditions such as asthma. But it's important to note the difference between a stressed child and a child with an anxiety disorder. "Everyone has certain levels of anxiety," says Steinbock. "An anxiety disorder is when the anxiety is prolonged and impedes function."

Lifestyle changes can help
One key step toward helping your child deal with stress is to change how you deal with stress. Take a look at the overall atmosphere you're creating as a parent. Are you relaxed and present at home, or are you constantly making efforts to assist your child in achievement? "Children learn by mimicking what they see," says Honoré. "When you talk about changing the tone and the tenor and the feel of the family, everyone is in it together. Model the behavior you want to see from your child."

Show your child that you value him simply for the person he is, and adjust any expectations you have that could be adding pressure. Give your child a chance to do activities he is good at that build self-confidence. Take a moment and assess your day planner. If it's looking dense, pare back on activities if your child is over-scheduled, and instead offer unstructured time for creative play, every day if possible.

Nutrition can quell stress, too
Nutrition and eating habits are another area to look at when reducing stress for your child. "Nutrition is a huge component for improving stress," says Steinbock "We have a lot of nutritional deficiencies in our diet and in our bodies." Steinbock recommends a diet that's low in sugar, high in essential fatty acids, especially omega-3s, and includes a multivitamin and a probiotic. He also suggests having your pediatrician check your child's magnesium levels. Another tip is as simple as eating mindfully. Instead of standing around the kitchen island snacking on crackers and cheese, have your family sit down together at the table. Offer a balanced meal of lean protein, two or more vegetables, and whole grains. Enjoy the time, chew your food well, and you'll create an opportunity to relax and connect with loved ones.
