Justifying your next muscle car just got a bit easier: at Bristol Motor Speedway, a team of five drivers took a stock 2011 Ford Mustang V6 around the track 1,457 times on a single tank of gas for an impressive average of 48.5 miles per gallon, at an average speed of almost 44 miles per hour. The number of laps is almost half again as many as the stated goal of 1,000. In fact, when the 1,000 lap mark was passed the muscle car still had a quarter tank of gas left. The distance covered, according to NASCAR driver Dave Ragan, who was among the Mustang drivers, was more than twice the length of two Sprint Cup races at Bristol -- and then some.
The all-aluminum, 3.7-liter dual-overhead-cam V6 in the stock 'Stang was mated to a manual six-speed to help boost fuel economy numbers. The team of drivers also employed fuel-saving driving techniques to smash the 1,000 lap goal. Along with its "democratization of technology" philosophy, Ford has made it a known goal to be a fuel efficiency leader across segments.
