Don’t look now, but the wagons are coming back. There was a time once, long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and long-roof vehicles reigned supreme as the family movers of choice across the country. Minivans had yet to clog the freeways and SUVs were still rugged machines designed for little more than bumping through the woods. Even though that was long ago and American tastes have evolved, there’s some evidence that we may be on the bleeding edge of a wagon renaissance. Need proof? Allow us to introduce you to the Volvo V60. This is about as far from a Ford Country Squire Wagon as you can get. The V60 builds on the already delicious lines of the S60 sedan to create a car that is about as attractive as a wagon can get, and the marketing gurus at Volvo are already doing their best to sell the car as a family cruiser that can handle a few curves in the road, too. There are plenty of engine options, but the most powerful is a turbocharged 6-cylinder good for more than 300 horsepower. Sounds like fun.
Right now, Volvo hasn’t said whether American buyers will be able to get their hands on the V60, but we’re thinking the company would be missing out if it kept the car off of our shores. Buyers have their pick from a number of stylish wagons these days -- everything from the Audi A4 Avant and Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen to the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon and the upcoming Acura TSX Wagon -- and younger buyers are looking for stylish, ecologically sound alternatives to high-riding SUVs. What better than a sharp-looking, powerful wagon from Sweden?
