Following in the footsteps of recently defunct brands such as Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer, Ford has announced it will close its Mercury line in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to Automotive News, some Mercury dealers were told that "Ford will end production of the rear-wheel drive Grand Marquis sedan on Sept. 30, the Mountaineer SUV on Oct. 1, the Milan midsize sedan on Oct. 2 and the Mariner small SUV on Oct. 3." Later in the article, a Ford spokesman confirmed the fourth-quarter target, but said no dates had been issued for select vehicle wind-downs.

Ford is shuttering the brand to focus on the Ford and Lincoln lines.
