GM is recalling 243,000 large crossovers to rectify seat-belt issues, while Mazda has put a notice out for its Mazda3 sedan and hatchback and its Mazda5 minivan due to faulty power-assist steering pumps and pipes. The voluntary recall by GM covers the 2009 and 2010 model year Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook. The second-row seat belts in these vehicles were potentially damaged in such a way that passengers could think the belt is buckled when in fact the latch has not engaged. According to USA Today:
"When customers fold the crossovers' second row of seats and then return it to its upright position, a faulty piece of interior trim can push the buckles' cover too far down the strap. This can hamper the seat-belt release button and possibly cause it to jam."
For Mazda, the recalls are set to fix power-assist failures. According to the manufacturer's website, any failure would make the vehicle harder to drive, but at no time would it be undriveable. Mazda notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the problem on Thursday.
