Most of the car news today is focused on the Paris Motor Show happenings -- and if you're interested, remember, we have a ton of our own coverage here -- but this is pretty cool. Florida automaker Mosler, sometimes referred to as the maker of "the last American supercar" (yeah, yeah--Corvette ZR1 and all that) will be competing again in the Car and Driver Lightning Lap at the Virginia International Raceway with its ultralight MT 900 Photon. The newest MT900 weighs a scant 2,275 pounds while putting out 550 horsepower; the car is expected to sprint to 60 mph in less than three seconds. The Mosler team says the Photon has a chance to best its own 2:45.9 record on the 4.1 mile lap from 2008. (Incidentally, last year's best lap time, set by a Lamborghini LP670-4, was eight freaking seconds slower.)
Mosler Vice President Jill Wagner has already made a few boasts: The MT900 Phantom will blast the aforementioned sub-three-second zero-to-60 time; will reach a top speed of 210 mph; will outbrake and outcorner all other U.S.-legal supercars; and will finish the lap in the 2:40 range. Oh, and do all that while consuming 40 percent less fuel than the other supercar competitors. Guess we'll have to wait until Oct. 7 to find out if Wagner is correct on any, some or all of those claims.
