| In what has to be one of the more brilliant marketing strategies in automotive history, Nissan is considering offering free loaner cars to 2010 Leaf electrical vehicle buyers to help alleviate any concerns they might have about the machine’s limited range. According to a report from The DetroitBureau.com, the incentive would be available to any Leaf owner who wanted to take a trip longer than the car’s stated 100-mile range. The no-cost loan of a conventional, gasoline-powered automobile would be made available to owners for up to a week. Besides figuring out how to afford the hefty premium that goes with owning an electric vehicle, the primary concern of most consumers considering purchasing one is range anxiety. That is, an apprehension about running out of juice in the middle of nowhere. A close second is the lengthy charging time; it’ll take anywhere from five to 10 hours to completely recharge an EV using a standard electrical outlet. This limits their appeal. The loaner- car option is still in the early planning stages, and it's not yet clear exactly how it would work. But if the plan gets approved, it could prove to be a strong marketing tool, and a new take on the concept of “buy one, get one free.”
