| The car that started the hybrid revolution is about to be transformed from a mere model into a whole new brand. At a recent dealer conference in Las Vegas, Toyota announced plans to add two new models to the Prius lineup by the end of 2012, expanding the name into a brand aimed at bolstering the automaker's dominance of the hybrid and eventually the electric-vehicle market in the U.S., according to a report by the Detroit Free Press. Toyota made “hybrid” a household name with the Prius, by far the best-selling gasoline-electric car on the planet. Toyota hopes that expanding and adding electric vehicles to the lineup will help the company comply with more demanding emissions regulations in the United States, Europe and other markets. One of the new hybrids will be bigger than the Prius, the other smaller. The larger Prius will have 50 percent more interior and cargo space than the 2011 Prius. "It will be Camry-sized, but more wagonlike," John O'Dell, senior editor of GreenCarAdvisor.com, told the Free Press. The smaller hybrid will be about the size of the Yaris compact. Not much more than that is known about the proposed vehicle, and Toyota isn’t releasing any details. The world's leading maker of hybrid vehicles is also widely expected to introduce a hybrid minivan, also based on Prius technology, as well as introduce six new gasoline-electric hybrid models globally by the end of 2012.
