Need a car for your upcoming visit to Vacation Hot Spot X, but saddled with paralyzing guilt over your massive carbon footprint? Love the Nissan Leaf you have on order so much that you can't bear the thought of parting with it when you fly off to a distant city? Worry not: Enterprise Rent-A-Car aims to fix your problem. The company recently announced plans to offer 600 electric vehicles for rent in various locations around the world. Two cars will be available: the Leaf and the Coda Automotive Sedan (yes, that's its real name), above, an electric 4-door based on a Chinese-market car called the Hafei Saibao.
Enterprise recently agreed to purchase 500 Leafs, and the company said this week that it plans to introduce 100 Codas into its rental fleet -- this at a time when even evolved and much-tested EVs like the Leaf suffer from short range, at least compared with a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle.
The Coda connection may seem odd — a large, well-known company pairing with a relatively unknown, and unproven, product — but it comes on the heels of a similar announcement. Coda is gearing up to enter the U.S. market, and Enterprise has agreed to offer courtesy rentals for Sedan customers during service and maintenance periods.
Interestingly, Coda and Enterprise say they are "discussing other ... partnership opportunities to help accelerate the adoption of all-electric cars." The press release doesn't offer any elaboration, but given the rental company's willingness to latch onto new brands and new technology, the statement is promising.
