This week on the boards, one Nestie asked couples if they said "I love you" every single day. For Jack and me, the answer would be a resounding yes. In fact, I probably say it an average of six times a day. I think it's fair to say that it comes out of my mouth more often that it does Jack's, but he says it a lot too. It's just that I'm usually the one who says it first.
It's like a weird compulsion. But I swear, I really do mean it every time. Okay, maybe not every time -- I'm sure it's an autopilot hiccup once in a while. Come to think of it, I have been known to spit it out inappropriately at the end of a random phone conversation (say, with my editor), which is, in a word, mortifying. So yeah, I'm probably throwing it out there a bit too frequently.
Jack and I had a conversation about this once when I was really piling on the love you's, and he admitted that it didn't pack a very powerful punch when I said it so darn often. So the argument could be made that you can wear it out. Maybe I should go on an "I love you" detox diet. I wonder if we could make it fresh again if we went a week without saying it? What do you guys think? How often do you say it?
