I have to admit, I'm more excited than Jack about moving into a small apartment. For more years than I can count, I've been lugging family antiques from apartment to apartment. Sure, I loved having them -- I'm a sucker for beautiful things -- but I sometimes felt those beautiful things were holding me hostage. Even when I lived by myself, I could never consider renting a studio, as I needed room for so many pieces (and I won't even get started on clothes and shoes).
But now that Jack and I can leave whatever we want upstate, we'll finally get to ruthlessly edit. It will be our first ever stab at minimalism! We have to be conscientious about everything we bring into the new place -- from shoes to seating -- and I'm really excited about that. I'm super-inspired by what this couple (also upstate/downstate folk) is doing with their new studio -- it's giving me lots of great ideas. Confession: I think our space is even smaller than theirs. I know for a lot of people, the idea of small living is totally unappealing. Meanwhile, I've never understood why people want huge master bedrooms (what are you guys doing in there? Seriously, what?), and those "great rooms" with the vaulted ceilings give me hives. I've never seen one utilized well. They always seem so sterile, empty, and cookie-cutter.
What do you guys think? Is small living your worst nightmare? Or do you think huge houses are a huge waste?
I love hearing how different people live. They're usually so adamant about it. So, please share!
