Every twenty seconds or so, Bravo runs a promo for the new show Kell on Earth. Their favorite villainous clip is the one where Kelly Cutrone says, "If you have to cry, go outside." Which to me, just sounds like good advice. But (I'm guessing) it makes most of the viewing public gasp. There’s something about mean women that makes most people uncomfortable for some reason.

But here’s the thing: I watched an episode, and guess what? Cutrone doesn't seem that bad to me. I once worked for a woman who gave me an average of one compliment a year. One. She was a big believer in zero positive feedback. If you heard nothing, you were golden. Course, you usually heard something (and it wasn't gentle), because she was super picky and unpredictable.

And you know what? It was awesome for me. As someone who is, by nature, a big baby, I learned to stop fearing criticism and just get on with it -- even if I did have to go outside and cry a lot. That woman is still an important mentor and I'm grateful for the alligator skin she gave me. She was an extremely effective person and I learned a ton. Tina Fey put it best when she said, "Bitches get stuff done." Amen, sister.

But...if Jack even walks through the room while a promo for Kell on Earth is playing, he comes unglued. To him, Cutrone is just unnecessarily bitchy and mean. He does not have warm fuzzy memories of my former boss and simply can't handle that type of woman. I guess to him, being nice is the most important thing.

Bottom line: If I want Jack to do something for me, I have to be nice (honey, baby, sweetie...). Not so at work. At work, it's all about motivating women, and women hate being patronized. So I have to can the honey-baby-sweetie and channel a bit more Cutrone. Relax, I've never made anyone cry at work.

What about you? Do you communicate in a completely different way to your coworkers than you do to your spouse? Is it hard to switch gears?
