I'll admit, I'm not exactly crazy about it when Holly makes jokes about my mom. The dynamic between the women in a guy's life is a pretty delicate thing. Probably every guy I've talked to has his own version and sometimes feels like he has to walk on eggshells in order to keep the peace. I didn't have sisters growing up, so my mother definitely formed most of my early ideas about women. On top of that, I come from a traditional southern family, so I always treated her with a ton of respect -- even as a jerky teenager. Luckily, my mother isn't very neurotic, but she is super-sensitive. So I tend to be really protective of her feelings. Meanwhile, my wife is a sarcastic, pull-no-punches girl who comes from almost the opposite type of family in every way. She thinks anything funny is fair game. So she can be relentless about the dorky/weird things my family, particularly my mother, does.
I'll admit, she gets a laugh out of me most of the time (my family is a comedy gold mine), just not a very big one when the joke is about my mom. Hey, Elvis loved his mama -- but did that make him a mamma's boy? Wait, don't answer that. Come on guys -- doesn't this get under your skin too?
PS: Next week we go visit Holly's family and I'll get to vent about their weird habits.
