It's been a few weeks since Parentpalooza, whereby Jack and I proceeded to visit my parents, then his, in quick succession. But today I remembered something that happened while visiting mine that completely cracked me up. Let me preface this by saying that last time we visited my 'rents (and this anecdote will betray how long it's been), we went to see the movie Wedding Crashers with them. Everyone enjoyed it, and I thought nothing of it until afterward when Jack confessed that viewing so many bare breasts was kind of awkward for him as he was seated between my father and me. I remember thinking, "Hmm...were there a bunch of boobs in that movie?" I'm just so desensitized to that sort of thing. Meanwhile, my hippie father could not be less prudish or uptight. So I thought it was funny, but I apologized to Jack anyway for the squirminess. Cut to our recent visit. Turns out that Jack, my father, and my stepmother had all jumped on the best-selling book bandwagon: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Well, whadya know? My parents just so happened to have a copy of the recently released Swedish film adaptation. Of course we'd HAVE to watch it together...right?
Well, besides being over two hours, the film delivered a mega dose of sexual violence in a way that no American film would dare. So just imagine the discomfort of my poor husband! My father and stepmother were, as usual, completely unaware of any awkwardness. But as soon as Jack and I got to our bedroom, I started laughing and couldn't stop. The experience definitely ranks near the top of the list of awkward parental situations I've put Jack through.
Now let's hear yours: What's your all-time most awkward in-law situation?
