| Surprise, surprise, surprise: Cars have become less fuel efficient over the past 25 years. In fact, according to a list posted on the Environmental Protection Agency's fueleconomy.gov website, only four (including one 2000 model year vehicle) of the top 10 most fuel-efficient cars of the past 25 years were introduced within the last decade. And the reasons are quite simple: Modern safety equipment has added weight to today’s machines; horsepower has increased substantially; and low gas prices for most of the past 25 years have kept innovation on the mileage front almost at a standstill. So which vehicles do you think offer the best mileage? Check out the entire EPA list after the jump. 1. 2000 Honda Insight: 49 mpg city/61 mpg highway/53 mpg combined 2. 2010 Toyota Prius: 51/48/50 3. 1986 Chevy Sprint: 44/53/48 4. 1990-1994 Geo Metro: 43/52/47 5. 1986-1987 Honda Civic CR-X: 42/51/46 6. 1994-1995 Honda Civic HB: 39/50/43 7. 2006-2010 Honda Civic Hybrid: 40/45/42 8. 1985 Pontiac Firefly: 39/47/42 9. 1985 Suzuki SA310: 39/47/42 10. 2010 Honda Insight: 40/43/41 Let us know what you think are today’s high-mileage superstars, and what automakers need to do to compete in a world where gas is an “alternative” fuel source.
