One of the interesting things about the smart-phone revolution was when companies discovered that people would as often pay for the ability to run a wide range of interesting applications as they would for the latest hardware upgrades. Now you can let people know when you're leaving, and see when they're doing the same. The more open spots you mark, the higher "parking karma" points you tally. (It actually seems like your parking karma does anything related to the app itself, but if you're one of those who like to keep score for the sake of keeping score, I'm sure it's for you.)
