A quick update to this post about the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration probe into stalling Toyota Matrix and Corolla vehicles: Toyota has issued a recall for the 1.1 million vehicles affected by improperly made engine-control modules. The affected vehicles are Matrixes and Corollas from the 2005 to 2008 model year, all of which were sold in North America.
According to AutoWeek via the MSN Autos home page:
"Cracks may develop at solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage — in some cases stopping the engine while the vehicle is being driven, the statement said."
(The statement to which that quote refers was one issued by Toyota regarding the recall.)
The new recall of 1.1 million cars brings Toyota's total since November 2009 to around 12.3 million vehicles worldwide, and about 10.5 million in the U.S. alone.
