| Possibly the most recognizable and coolest car in the world, the Aston Martin DB5 driven by secret agent James Bond in such films as "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball," fetched about $4.1 million at auction today in London, according to sources at the auction. The silver sports car had been sequestered in the private collection of Jerry Lee, a Philadelphia-based radio broadcaster and philanthropist, since 1969. It is one of two original machines driven by actor Sean Connery in those Ian Fleming-penned masterpieces of the spy film genre. According to the London Telegraph, it is the only one to survive intact -- the second car disappeared mysteriously from a Florida warehouse, suspected of having been dismantled for parts. Certainly not a fitting end for such a brilliant piece of automotive history. Released in 1963, the stock DB5 had a top speed of 145 mph and featured some posh accessories -- that is, for a British car, anyway. But this fictional Q-Branch creation, originally conceived by Oscar-winning special effects expert John Stears, sports some rather interesting modifications, including machine guns, a bulletproof shield, revolving number plates, a tracking device, a removable roof panel, an oil-slick sprayer, a nail spreader, a smoke-screen generator, wheel-mounted tire shredders and an ejection seat -- all controlled from factory-installed toggles and switches hidden in the center armrest.
